PHP Basics – Part 2: Getting your own local Webserver

About Class

Learn to install an Apache Web Server on your own computer along with PHP support. This is for all who don’t want to bother with file uploads every time they want to text their HTML/PHP pages on a live web space.

This is a part of my web development series that covers PHP, MySQL, HTML and JavaScript. Each of these classes can be booked separately but please make sure you meet the prerequisites stated below.

Syllabus

- Download the Apache Web Server from Apache Friends
- Unzip and install the software package for Windows
- configure the Apache Server for your local machine
- run a test with a simple PHP web page that will run locally

Workshop: Using Gimp Part 3 – Isolating Objects

About Class

Gimp can be used to isolate an object from the background. There are several methods to do this, we will use the method that all professional designers prefer: Using the path tool to isolate the shape of the object. We will then select the space around the object and remove it, so that the object is available without any distracting background.

Syllabus

- loading a photo from your desktop
- using the path tool to define the shape of our object
- selecting the object according to the defined path
- inverting the selection to remove the background
- adding transparency to the picture
- removing the background to make it transparent

Prerequisites

Gimp must be installed and running. First experience with Gimp is necessary to come to this workshop. If you don’t have this experience, use the tutorial video in the Moodle class at http://www.rent-a-tutor.com/moodle/ or come to my free class “Gimp installation and first steps”.

- create your first simple HTML page for your web space
- download and install the FileZilla FTP client for Windows
- set up FileZilla with your web space credentials
- upload your HTML start page to your web space

Blender Kurs findet statt

Inzwischen haben sich drei Leute für den Kurs angemeldet und bezahlt. Der Kurs wird also wie geplant stattfinden. Wer sich noch kurzfristig anmelden möchte (es sind noch 7 Plätze frei), kann dies in der VHS in SecondLife tun. Der Anmeldewürfel befindet sich im Infotreff auf dem ersten Tisch links.

Es wird übrigens in den nächsten 1-2 Wochen auch noch einen Kurs zur Erstellung von Sculpties mit Blender geben. Das dazu nötige Python-Skript funktioniert nicht mit der Alpha Version Blender 2.50, so dass die Sculptie-Ersteller noch eine Weile die alte Version 2.49 oder 2.49b benutzen müssen.

Letzter Blender-Kurs für Version 2.49

Nächste Woche startet mein letzter Kurs in SL, der sich mit der Bedienung des 3D Programms Blender befasst. Das Programm wird inzwischen neu überarbeitet und die neue Version 2.50 dürfte im Laufe des Jahres fertiggestellt werden. Eine Alpha-Version kann man schon herunterladen, diese ist jedoch noch nicht vollständig fertig.

Wer also noch die Gelegenheit ergreifen will, die alte Version 2.49 zu lernen, der kann sich bis nächsten Montag noch verbindlich anmelden. Der Kurs kostet 3000 Linden Dollar (ca. 8 Euro) für alle drei Abende und er findet jeweils samstags um 19 Uhr in der VHS im Second Life statt. Start ist Samstag der 06.03.

Heute um 20:30 Uhr und morgen um 19:00 Uhr könnt ihr an einem kostenlosen Infoabend teilnehmen, bei dem ich dann gern Fragen zum Kurs beantworte.

Which ads do you like better?

When I did a presentation on web 2.0 tools some weeks ago, I talked about webmail and which free webmail services you can use. I personally like Google Gmail very much but I wanted to show some alternatives in my class.

When I presented Gmail along with Yahoo Mail, Zoho Mail and Microsoft Live Mail, I pointed out that I don’t like Microsoft’s webmail because they have some very distracting ads in the webmail interface. I was very surprised when somebody in the audience told me in the chat window, that Google Gmail also have ads in their webmail interface.

I never thought about that, but he was right. Google is also placing a text ad on the top of the mail overview and to the right of each opened e-mail. I have used Gmail so long, that I hardly recognize these as ads any more.

On the other hand, I recognize all the graphical, picture laden and maybe even animated ads on every page and I find them extremely annoying. Don’t get me wrong, I never click on these annoying ads, I’d rather try to find an ad-blocker to avoid them. On the other hand, I never felt the urge to block any text-only ads in my webmail interface.

But wait, there is more! Google usually places really interesting ads near the e-mail content. I even find an interesting link occasionally in the sidebar if I read an e-mail so that I sometimes even click on one of these text links to find out more. So, on second thought I can’t say that Gmail does not have ads in their webmail interface, but they don’t have distracting and/or annoying ads there.

If you have the choice, what would you like better? A small collection of well chosen text link ads that won’t distract you from reading your e-mail or a colorful, obtrusive image that jumps right in your face when you open the e-mail you want to read?

3. Send a private message to “Marian Heddesheimer” within the moodle site. Please tell me what course you would like to enroll to.

I will send out enrollment keys next weekend. If there will be more requests than available seats, I will randomly pick as many students as there are seats available.

Feuer in der Küche

Heute war Feuerlöschen angesagt. Meine letzte Exkursion für diese Woche mit der Gruppe “Teaching Languages in a Virtual World” ging auf eine Schweizer Sim. Hier war eine Simulation aufgebaut, mit der man das Verhalten bei einem typischen Küchenbrand trainieren kann.

Obwohl ich diese Simulation schon kannte, war mir nie in den Sinn gekommen, sowas auch zum Sprachenlernen einzusetzen. Trotzdem erscheint mir die Idee ganz pfiffig zu sein.

Die Lehrer beobachten die Sprachschüler, wie sie in der fremden Sprache unter Stress kommunizieren. Interessantes Konzept.
