If you are annoyed about Second Life ® because the login don’t work or you have to pay for each upload: You can build your own with not much effort on your own computer. I did it today and it took me about 2 hours to set up all things and solve the first starting problems.
I installed it on a Windows XP Notebook. As viewer I’m using Hippo Viewer. In this viewer, click on “Grids” and choose “local” from the grid list. The OpenSim Application must be running in the background at this time. Now you have your own Simulator on your own. You get 45000 Prims and you never have to pay for Texture/Sound/Animation Uploads any more.
To use it from another computer did take some extra work, because I had to include the correct IP-address of the server machine in several places. But after that, I can now login to “my” grid from any comupter in the local network.
Since this was quite easy to setup, this scenario seems to be a good choice for small networks (Companies, Schools, etc.) to run their own 3D-Environment.
